6 Steps to Becoming a Customer Data Rockstar

minute read

Data rockstars are the icons of this generation of business. They
drive innovation by delivering a data-first operating culture within
their company- and look damn good doing it.

Here are 6 ways you can create a strong data culture, headlined by a band of rockstars.

1. TRANSCEND POLITICS

To fully assess the scope and velocity of the project to become data-driven, it’s important to understand the current appetite for change within the company.

So, identify who will champion change and who will resist it.

Use this information to detect roadblocks early and tailor meaningful business cases to key stakeholders.

2. BEFRIEND PRIVACY AND SECURITY

The Privacy and Security team are key allies in the quest for data progress.

They help data heroes define the context and understand how to build a persuasive business case that speaks the intricate language of compliance.

While vigilantism may work for their comic book counterparts, life is easiest for data heroes when they operate inside of the rules. Unambiguously.

3. BE HUMAN

Not everyone you deal with will have a data background.

Instead of firing off a litany of data science lingo in order to sound credible, imagine yourself as a translator, bridging the gap between different languages.

Better yet, be a storyteller. Spin a data-enriched yarn in an inside voice to keep stress levels down and imaginations piqued at every stage of the project.

4. SOCIALISE THE PROJECT

In the quest to become data-driven, great minds think alike.

Share your work with your colleagues. You might actually find other divisions have similar needs and joining together multiple roads to ROI is absolutely invaluable.

In one recent example, our client saved over $1.5 million by implementing a single CDP solution across a range of departments.

5. KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO SIMPLIFY

Make the output user-friendly.

We’ve seen data teams deliver incredible insights that are so complex that they are not “user-friendly”.

Even if the data is amazing and revolutionary, if the actionable insights can’t be understood then it’s a fail. Use visualization, infographics, dashboards and storytelling to help your peers learn how to benefit from the data.

Simplify, but make sure you don’t sacrifice the essence of the insight.

6. SHARING IS CARING

Driving a data-first operating culture requires transparency and sharing. It’s about making the data available to all–empowering everyone to ask questions and get answers quickly.

Use simple tools and simple providers to distribute data throughout a business.
